Samaritan killed as he helped stranded motorist - Irish Independent

Bmerbill - William Lanigan (45), from Mountarmstrong, Co. Kildare, died shortly after 8:00pm on Saturday, when he was struck by a van while walking at Donadea, Naas.

on the first point, it's just a thought, but there's a group of us going to watch the GP somewhere and another going to the Boyne100,. surely we could arrange a couple of meet's and throw ina tenner each to make it respectable,...????

Just spoke with Tony (TC) who took up the baton and called the University. Bills colleagues are obviously still in shock but TC was told by the man that he spoke to, after explaining who he was etc, that he would speak to Bill's wife at an appropriate time and get back to TC probably next week sometime.

So, can we leave this to TC now to deal with since we don't want to bombard anyone with our requests.

Thanks TC, let's hope something good can be done that Bill would be proud of !!

As mentioned before Bill was always helpful and enjoyed the bit of banter on the site, I had only the briefest of conversations with him at the SNOB and he seemed like a genuine, nice guy. He'll be missed.

Aw man.

I got a PM from Bill last Friday night slagging me about the quality of the pic of my new bike! I met him at 1 or 2 of the NoBs at the Deadman's and while I can't say I knew him very well, he was (as previously said) always smiling and in good form. I'm posting the PM just to show Bill's ever present good humour:

congrats on the bike, it looks the biz. However as the featured bike (well deserved) can we get a better picture of it please. Without all the glint and glitter and the shadow of a big hairy biker and maybe Kate Moss or Angelina Jolie draped creatively over it perhaps.

Just read....WTF walking!!

I have seen many post about accidents with RTE quotes and so on...This is different. I did not know the guy but that's neither here nor there and like all the people I have talked to or met on the forum he was by all the lovely accounts, sound. I still feel somewhat strange in that it is a little too close to home.

It's just not right...

I've stopped a few times to help folks stranded on the roadside. Never really thought about the danger that puts myself in. Something to keep in mind when your out there lads (and lasses).

can't get bill out of my mind this morning - never met him but he was one of the guys i would have listed as the regular contributors here. As tazzie says we are a band of brothers here all of us. There is some connection thats for sure and this makes us realise it exists.

Dying helping someone else is the ultimate sacrifice - we know that today he's gods moderator in that big forum in sky. You will be missed brother, keep an eye on us all! God Speed on Angels Wings !

Its things like this that really bring home to you how lucky we are every day.

I met Bmerbill just a couple of times so I can't claim to have known him well.
However it was clear that he was a gentleman of quiet good humour.
This post shows us what kind of man he was - the antithesis of the "spotty faced git".
My condolences go out to his family and friends. The world is poorer for his passing.

God speed, Bmerbill - gentleman, physicist and saviour of stranded motorists.
