This book is just fantastic, make the Davinci code look like a kids book.
I could not put this down, the hero ride a bike in it and the heroine is the sexiest killer I have ever read about.

This guy has done 4 global trips and has written this book on tips/tricks for travelling and touring different countries. From planning long and short term trips, tools needed for maintenance and roadside repairs. He even goes into currencies and insurance. There's some good stories and excellent pics in it despite it being a few years old. But travelling is travelling and it does give great basics/tips. However, he is American so a bit of it is written with them in mind but overall I suppose there's a bit there for everyone.

OK, finished book last night, and I'm glad to say it got better. Was a good insight into the Paris-Dakar race that you don't get to see on TV.
I never thought I'd say this but I'd recommend the book to most bikers.
Just waiting for the TV program in November now - though Charley Boorman does sicken me!

Now here is a book that I really enjoyed, it was well writen and very funny. In it he tells some of the same stories as Hunter Thompson but from the bikers point of view rather than the arty farty writer.
there are plenty of stories in this that as a biker you will read and crack up laughing out loud that if you did not ride a bike you would nt get.

This book is a funny read only in that it is writen with the intention of scaring mr. joe public and beefs up a lot of the hype around the MC scene in the US and elsewhere, complete hollywood-esk type bull but worth a look all the same.

A fantastic book about the whole Harley and outlaw biker scene relationship, one which Harley try to sell a watered down version as a lifestyle but have been slow to embrace in the past. A decent go at trying to explain why some people are draw to Harley and what makes them tick.

Buy it, rent it, steal it. There are some fantastic pictures.

I have put up one, a lovely 3/4 page spread. It brought a tear to my eye, one amongst many fantastic pictures.

Just bought it along with his other one 'Way to Go', Dehli to Belfast on a Royal Enfield and Chicago to LA on a Harley.

Also bought Red Tape and White Knuckles by Lois Pryce, one womans solo trip through Africa.

Best bike related book I read was "what if I had never tried it" Valentino Rossi's life story so far. A great insight into what makes the greatest racer ever tick.

I liked some of it, but halfway through it I got the notion into my head that the author was the type that liked the sound of his own voice a bit much. I must have missed the timeless philosophical implications bit..... is that near the end because i got a bit bored and flicked....?

it is throughout: at first, the narrator examines the opposition in western thought between romantic and classic views of the world, eg. immediate artistic appearance of a bike vs. underlying form and function of the same bike or art vs. science/technology

No, not confused. I follow it.
Maybe Im just a bit jaded from reading books that go far too deep into the authors own philosophy on "stuff", when it could have been summed up as "you know..like that budda guy, but with guns" or "you know..like jesus, but with heroin and a sex addiction and a multimillion contract"...... or "you know..like xxx(insert american motivational guru) but newer"

I dont mean to knock your enjoyment of the book, and as I said, Im a bit jaded on philosophy and "being all deep".
I may well have missed the profound discovery that others have had with this book,or the originality within it, or indeed missed the book for so long that by the time I got around to it, it's originality had been fused into other books I've read first...Im not sure.

I appreciate the synopsis though, it'll definately put a new slant on my second reading of it.

lmao, yeah learning is fun, but its a pita when you have to answer questions on something you enjoy and do it to fit an accepted interpretation..... takes the fun out of it
Right now..im learning that i know fcuk all about cbr600 carbs...like forgetting to make sure the air line was on the sub air cleaner....which is a pita to get on...and so the carbs are off for the 5th time.... anyway...will be worth it once it gets onto the track. But at least I've no duality issue with it...i am the carbs etc

There's a book called Zen and Now, which is about the editor of the Wheels section of the newspaper in Toronto, Canada (my hometown) following Pirsig's route. Its absolutely brilliant and if anyone would like to borrow it (don't think it'd be so freely available here considering its a Canadian book), then PM me

Also another book thats Canadian, called Riding with Rilke: it follows an English professor who rides his Ducati Monster from Alberta, Canada down to Texas to a famed collection of James Joyce original manuscripts. Its great as there's an Irish connection there too that runs through the book and the author, Ted Bishop is the best motorcycle writer I've yet read.
