There are many helpful topics in the IBF Help files, but there may be many items/features people use which could be included.

The purpose of this thread is for you, the members, to submit your additions, modifcations or improvements to the Help files.
Any additions used in the Help files will be credited so your karma is rewarded

On thing to update on the "Logging in and out".

It's also taking into account your IP address, not only the computer. I have only one laptop that I'm using at work or at home (so two different ISP).
I've asked to remain logged but when I'm changing location I have to enter my password again (well it is saved by Firefox so no biggie).
This is recent because before the last update it was fine.

I've updated the Help Files, Searching Topics and Posts:
The section in blue has been added.

Searching Topics and Posts

The search feature is designed to allow you to quickly find topics and posts that contain the keywords you enter.

There are two types of search form available, simple search and advanced search. You may switch between the two using the 'More Options' and 'Simple Mode' buttons.

Simple Mode

All you need to do here is enter in a keyword into the search box, and select a forum(s) to search in. (to select multiple forums, hold down the control key on a PC, or the Shift/Apple key on a Mac) choose a sorting order and search.

Advanced Mode

The advanced search screen, will give you a much greater range of options to choose from to refine your search. In addition to searching by keyword, you are able to search by a members username or a combination of both. You can also choose to refine your search by selecting a date range, and there are a number of sorting options available. There are also two ways of displaying the search results, can either show the post text in full or just show a link to the topic, can choose this using the radio buttons available.

If the administrator has enabled it, you may have a minimum amount of time to wait between searches, this is known as search flood control.

There are also search boxes available at the bottom of each forum, to allow you to carry out a quick search of all of the topics within that particular forum.


Using Google to search IBF
The minimum number of characters in a search is 4 characters.
For anyone wanting to search (whether it's 3 characters or any phrase at all) your are MUCH BETTER OFF using a google search of IBF per the following:

site:www.irishbikerforum.com <search phrase>

e.g.
go to www.google.ie (or use the google search bar in your broser if present), and type in a search string.
In this example I want to find all references to YZF made in IBF, so I type the following search string:
site:www.irishbikerforum.com YZF

I can even search IBF for posts containing R1, as follows:
site:www.irishbikerforum.com R1

I'll post future updates here too because unfortunately a lot of the updates I made to the Help Files were lost when there was work done on the DB
In the event that happens again at least the updates will be recorded here.

Logging in and out

If you have chosen not to remember your log in details in cookies, or you are accessing the board on another computer, you will need to log into the board to access your member profile and post with your registered name.

When you log in, you have the choice to save cookies that will log you in automatically when you return. Do not use this option on a shared computer for security.

If your public IP address changes you will be required to login again.
Examples:
1) If you are logged in from a work machine and then go home, you will need to login again.
2) Using a laptop on different networks (different public IP address) will also require logging in again.

You can also choose to hide - this will keep your name from appearing in the active users list - if the board administrator allows anonymous logins.

Logging out is simply a matter of clicking on the 'Log Out' link that is displayed when you are logged in. If you find that you are not logged out, you may need to manually remove your cookies. See the 'Cookies' help file for more information.

tbh that's a bit out of date now (updates were lost in a DB upgrage), it now reads:

There are only a few people with warnings, the most anyone has is 2; it goes up to 10.
Almost without exception people cop on fairly quick to early 'mistakes' and get on just fine afterwards

It's a great reflection on all the IBF members (yes that's all of you) that Moderators don't have to spend huge effort on enforcing the Board Guidelines (self moderation is the best moderation), and therefore Mods can spend their time contributing to threads, enhancing their forums with stickys like Useful Links, FAQ, Forum Charter etc.

Inserting a link-





1 Open the page you want to link to.

2 Copy the URL from the address bar at the top of the screen (highlight, right click, "copy")

3 Along the top of the reply box, next to the smilie is a green "+" ( if you hold the cursor over it, it will show "insert link")

4 Click on this, right click "paste"

5 Click "OK"

6 Another box will come up that says "View my website" - right click this and delete (if you want to )

7 Now you can call the link anything you want to eg Linky, click me , here etc.

8 Click Ok .



Sounds a bit complicated but you should get the hang of it quickly enough.
You can practice it as many times as you like, just don't click post reply at the bottom of the page.

when you click get new posts, you can also select the date range at the very bottom RHS: today by default, but you can see active topics for last week/month/etc.
usefull if you've been away for a while.

You can also see directly the update to the topic you've subscibed to in your control panel:

View new content method:

Click on your username (top right of page) When the list drops down, select my settings.

You have a few options but the one I am concerned with is the search setting --> View new content method.

If you change the setting to: Show me all content I have not read, then hey presto, next time you click View New Content, there's a gazzillion posts you havent read yet.


Never noticed that before, and here was me thinking that it was a little quiet on the forum lately !!!!
