Following the death of my previous chain toolkit, I've invested a bit more money in what I hope to be more decent tools.


A chain breaker tool:

A chain assembly tool:


I fugred this one would be enough to "press" the plate and close the link.

But it appears that the "bolt" is shallow and that I will need another tool to "flatten" the pin and lock the plate in place...


How do you do it ?

but then when the plate is pressed (not too much, but just enough not to compress the o/x rings) you have to "flatten" the pin (rivet ?)in order to keep the plate in place.

I was wondering when this was going to happen....a screw-type master link. Would be handy to have in your toolkit as spares.
They also do fancy colourdy chains

i use the hammer method aswel

the angle grinder to get the link out ( and if you want just cut right thru the chain. but be cafeful)

the vise grip and nut work fine (as in video)

i put a hammer on the back of the chain and tap the front with another hammer
i just put 3 little nicks on each rivet. i dont go mad with it

Was out with my own bike today in the Garage, just noticed my Rivet link on the chain, the pins are still as they were when they were pushed through from whoever changed the chain before i bought it.

Must get hammer out

You sure about that? If you're using a proper tool to flare the pins, it doesn't look like much.

I just replaced the chain on the tenere

both tool quoted in post 1 work perfectly

I just have to figure out how to flattent the rivet head.
I tried with a hammer and a T bar placed behind the link but with my left hand using the hammer it's not easy... I barely markedthe rivet head

What about putting a piece of flat steel at the end of the bolt tool in post one and winding it in to flare the rivet?
Why are you using your left hand? In the video there's two people doing it. The hammer at the back is a weight to take the inertia out of the impact (it wont work without solid weight here)-the other person is using a hammer and punch of some sort to flare the rivet.

I'm using my left hand because the rear sprocket is on the left hand side of the bike (as in the video)

So I kneel/crouch at the back of the bike
I have to hold the metal bar with my right hand from the right hand side through the wheel to reach the rear of the chain link.
then my left hand is on the LHS of the rear wheel,on the sprocket side.

If I want to use my right hand I either have to fit my whole body between the top of the wheel and the mudguard, or lie on the bike, feet on the handlebar

Or I'll ask my better half to give me a hand.

About putting a flat piece of metal to cover the hole on the bolt, I thought about it, but a flat piece of metal will not work very easily as it will spread the load on the whole surface of the rivet head.

I would then have to exert a very important force to flatten it.

I would need a kind of cone, short and wide to spread the head.. well... a proper tool

the hammer technique has the advantage of being non perfect by putting weight/shock on a partial surface of the rivet head, and spreading it.

I check my toolbox and I do not have a adequate chisel.

I'll find a way, I need the bike on tuesday anyway.. or tomorrow morning if I plan to attend a SMBR/LSBR

Ah right...i forgot you lkely have panniers on your bike limiting access.
My approach to it would be:

Get two hammers.
Kneel on the lhs facing the wheel.
Put the rivet link to the place on the sprocket where you have the best access.
Hold one hammer by the head with your left hand behind the chain/link.
Using your right hand, hand lateral, and hammer across your chest, tap the link. Hold the hammer just below the head.
Would be much easier with a drawing but dont have the scanner.

Alternatively lie on the ground on your back, head about where the sprocket is,left had same place behind sprocket. Tap with right hand. Again, a picture would tell a thousand words.

I used Emilia's help

She held one hammer behind the sprocket, its head against the pin at the back of the link

I flattened the head, it's not perfect but it should work.. time will tell

I had removed the panniers anyway
