Had the R1 out at the weekend for it's first official spin and my first venture with Yamaha ownership,i was having issue's with the Rev counter,,start up was fine but then the rev counter needle would fly up to 7,000 RPM,,,Bike start up and idling fine,heading for Cashel along the new stretch of Motorway and the bike was struggling to hit up over 80M.P.H overtaking and Rev counter needle still dancing and misbehaving but riding fine below this

Doing a bit of Head scratching and went around the net for some answers on it this morning,,seemingly the needle dancing to 7,000rpm with the 1998 to 2000 R1 is a fault diagnostic and the newer models throw it up as in code error on the newer L.C.D clocks,,,pointing towards an EXUP problem with the Valve itself or slack or siezed EXUP cables...

The bike itself has been sitting unridden for at least a year and on removing the cover off the EXUP valve i see 1 of the cables is slack and a nice bit of corrosion and dryness around the outside of the unit itself because of Exhaust heat and it's location on the exhaust itself,near the underside of it taking all the sith the road can throw up..

Found this site on my searching, WWW.CARTESTSOFTWARE.COM and on the main page it has a section called Pat's Motorcycle Page,,Dealing with the 1st generation FZS1 Fazer 1000 with detailed sections in it and pictures covering the servicing of the EXUP (exhaust Valve Maintance)amongst other items..

Now to get the spanners out some part of the day and give it it's once over as it's recommended to be done every 6,000 miles or at service time and hopefully resolve its misbehaving issues

Excellent... Hard to get good info on them.... I had planned doing up a thread with pics...


Spent a lot of hours on mine last week.... and I think I now have servo problems....



.... but found a new one on eBay... Must ask about postage...

Good stuff,,,Yamaha ownership comes at a price

Was wrecking my head as not used to these Yamahas,,the R1 in question is going to be ridden til winter and then it's engine used as a donor for the Spondon R1,,but had serious thoughts of petrol + matches yesterday morning,,JoeSoap and Deragoth witnessed me taking some of my frustrations out on a truck driver in a petrol station who pulled in across me at the pumps

Them EXUP's are a nice ride when set up properly...

just seeing this thread now. had the same issue with my fazer and found the same info as ken says on pats page. really clear info on his page
