I'm thinking of changing the gearing on the Aprilia and that was very useful.

Thinking of going up a few teeth on the back?

I went up two teeth on the rear sprocket - tis well worth it. Cheapest performance mod out there. Means the speedo reads a little high (didn't bother with a speedohealer), but twisting the right hand is just that little bit more fun now!

Speedo on the Falco is attached to the rear disk so there shouldn't be any difference there.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm....................two teeth you say.............strokes chin.

going 'down' 1, at the front sprocket is roughly the same as 'up 2' at the back,
but it makes little difference to the chain length.
at times, I found when changing to a larger rere sprocket, the chain was now too short
(even only a couple of teeth)
(also, fiddling the front sprocket may (?) be easier than taking back end apart)
as Hatcho said, it just has to be the cheapest performance mod going.
(damn those BM shaftdrives, lol)

Thought about doing the same myself, but was advised that the reduction in the size of the front sprocket (from 17 to 16 teeth in the SV's case) would result in a tighter 'turning curve' for the chain as it looped around the sprocket. That said, I've never heard of anyone having issues when they dropped a tooth up front on their SVs. Couple of lads in the US actually did both (up 2 at the back, down 1 on the front) but I think they were just mad to wheelie all the time!!

I've dropped 1 tooth off the front on loads of bikes I've had, 2 x Superdukes, RC8, Fireblade, R1, etc etc and never had a problem with any of them apart from "feeling" faster on the pick up and the lumpy twins being more manageable at slow town speeds etc. I have heard people comment on reduced chain-swingarm clearance due to smaller diameter front sprocket which could cause chain rubbing in a part of the swing arm or on the chain guide rubbers but I haven't found it an issue. People also comment on excessive chain wear for same reason but to be honest, people often complain about reduced chain life after 5000 miles. Solution: clean, adjust & lubricate your chain correctly and you'll easily get 3 times that out of it (bike/power/cockhanded right hand dependant).
As S10 said, going up 2 on the back can lead to the chain being too short due to increased diameter of rear sprocket.
Folks, for about 20mins work and €15 for a front sprocket...................do it, you'll be amazed at the difference it makes to the "spriteliness" of the bike. Only downside is loosing top speed capability, but to be fair, how many of us max out the bikes every week going on our weekly ride? (
Again, good find Sean, have seen em before but none as comprehensive as this one

Sorry about the zombie thread resurrection, but I was looking at improving the motorway mpg on the Fazer. (I know, I am cheap, I am already getting like 4.3 l/100km too!!
