i have invoices from previous owner on all work done by bmw mechanic in previous 12 months on mine and it was more then what i paid him for the bike; so if your happy with a non-affiliated mechanic working on your machine there are plenty of them out there - i did and have not paid anything near what a dealer would charge. but if its a valuable machine and you go to sell you might find you bike is worth less because its not a bmw dealer serviced guarantee; those bmw riders can be bleedin picky
good luck

That's not something unique to BMW. I've never gotten a filter socket with a tool kit, but they're easily found online and in auto-shops.
EDIT: Spelling!

Or do what I do! Go to your local friendly BMW bike shop and pester them until they lend it to you.
Which they have done.............twice!
Alternatively post up on the forum looking for a loan. At least one member has one!
I just enjoy getting it out of the dealers, always to the cry of "hurry back with it".

Just had the tyres and brakes on my panzer done tonight ... all happy (well, rear caliper will need proper looking after soon, but no big deal)
Boxers are a doddle to work on for most stuff ... oil & filters are easy .. brakes (even servo ones) are fairly straightforward ... valve clearances are a doddle with the cylinder heads so easily accessible - only reason to visit a dealer is for hard-to-get parts and/or for a computer-based diagnostic.
Filter removal tool is about €5 from http://motorworks.co.uk - buy a service kit (plugs / filters etc) for about €50 and include the filter tool in your basket to save on shipping ...

Another sensible man. Too much mystique about Beemers and some other brands. Any competent mech should be able to do the basic stuff at least. As P says, the diagnostic is the only area that is problematic. Unfortunately, some jobs are labour intensive. Clutch plate on an RT1150 for instance. About 6 - 8 hours at least. Massive strip down, removal of final drive, etc. Simple battery change not so simple. Bloody thing is buried under the tank. For instance, to replace a battery on an R1100S, Fairings off, tank lifted or off, etc., just to replace a battery ?? One tip. If you can afford the almost €200 from Duffy's for a BMW battery, buy it. After markets ok but, given the additional expense / hassle of fitting, you want a battery that will last the course, like about 5 years and not have to think about it until then.
Full bleed on ABS a little time consuming compared to a standard set-up but really no different to most ABS systems. Throttle cables on some ? BMW are having a laugh ! But the basic stuff, no mystery.

sorry meant sparkplug - which you should get in tool kit?

Newer Beamers don't even come with those !!
(Annoyance, my Panzer doesn't have a kit, and while I have a good handful of spark-plug wrenches the right size, all are too thick to use in the head, seems the R12 block likes slimline plug-wrench walls !)
