howdy all,
was out for a spin on the hornet yesterday and sometimes when i was moving up through the gears i could hear them grate a bit, moreso at higher revs. i did replace the clutch cable recently but its seems to be fine, not too slack and not overly tight either. anyone got any ideas as to what might be going on?

Might be worthwhile loosening the clutch cable, and seeing if it makes a difference. Then tighten it and see if it makes a difference. Dont mean to sound pedantic...its what i'd do.
Sometimes the gear selector lever pivot wears, causing a bit of slop in changing gears leading to crunching.

Maybe just coincidence - as you say it was a while ago that you did the cable.
How is the oil? Correct level - good condition?
I Wouldnt beat myself up about the cable too much just yet - as it may not be the issue at all...
With a sequential dog leg box as fitted to bikes...
you actually dont really need a clutch to move up hrough the gears i.e. I dont advocate it - but you can change gear
smoothly shifting up without having to pull the clutch.
Tangent time:
Depending on the bike - I've noticed if you dont pull in the lever all the way it actually 'snicks' in smoother as the next cogs pull or catch the gear into place - as opposed to completey disengaging and dropping it with a clunk into the next gear.
Anyway - back on track - in summary - what Im saying is that grating gears on the up change may not necessarily have anything to do with the clutch.
Could be the gear lever / selector is off/worn slightly and not actually pushing the gears home - hence the teeth on each cog are spinning against each other longer than they should be as opposed to clicking smartly home.
Worth checking out.

I prefer to call this tool the 'persuader' - hammer is such an ugly word.

Maybe you're too light on the gear pedal and it needs a good flick up to get into gear because the clutch isn't fully disengaging. With the bike in first let the clutch out slowly until you find the biting point. It may be that the new cable is tighter and the adjuster (presuming there is one) needs to be adjusted.
