[Empty One]

I had the bike cradle conected by a professional, but its not charging the unit. There is power to the cradle. The unit works fine when its in the car cradle (connected to cigar socket). It looks like the bike cradle is faulty, but why, when it is getting power. Any other possibilities before I contact Garmin?

Maybe contact the person who fitted it.Sounds like a dodgy connection.

Wow, that was quick!
It seems like the obvious cause, but when we put a tester on the pins there is continuous power there.

you mention "conected by a professional", just curious ... why not just return to said professional, and get it fixed?

Has it been wired dirctly to the battery or is it ignition fed
check that the cables are not inverted
If its ignition fed get a multi meter and check voltage with ignition on & then check it with engine running
havent heard about any proplems with them cradles yet.

the guy proved to me that there was power to the cradle, so I'm not sure what more he can do?? (Unless Vstrom is right and there is an issue with the way he wired it).

Ignition fed. What should I see when I use the meter (i) with ignition on and (ii) with engine running?

Btw,just to be clear, you say its not charging, but does it power-on on the bike (ie can you use it to navigate).
Afaik, there is only 2 Power wires, ie., no separate charging connection to the battery.

Sounds like the wires are wrong way round....easy enough to figure out yourself, the wire with the fuse in it should be to the switched live. No idea what pin should read what..should be the same as the pin layout of the car cradle if you want to do comparisons....ie with car igniton on, whatever pins are +12v should be +12v on the bike cradle with bike ignition on going to ground/metal. Red multimeter lead goes to pin, black one to ground/metal.
On the 550, with bike power on it powers the unit and tops up the battery.

Thanks to everyone for your replies and suggestions. Vstrom very kindly offered to take a look, and quickly diagnosed the problem - not earthed properly. He then proceeded to fix it. So, I take back my comment about it having been installed by a professional, and instead say it was sorted by one. As I suspected he would not listen to any talk of reward, so I have topped up my Walk for Alone contribution suitably. Thanks Christy.
