Lads i need a bit of help. Been having electrical problems with the bike since the start of March and it hasnt started since. Basically its like trying to start the bike with the kill switch off or the sidestand down while in gear. Turn the key everything lights up as normal but the engine will not turn over when i hit the ignition switch nor will the fuel pump prime. Ive tested the sidestand switch, clutch switch, fuses, removed dissasembled the right switch housing and tested the kill switch and ignition switch. Fuel pump works when 12v is applied directly to it. Tested the leads coming from the ignition itself and they are fine, checked the alarm in case it was the immobiliser and battery is in good condition, also checked the grounds.
Reckon its down to the ICU now. can't get one from city spares or breakers to test. The ICU is made by Mitsubishi and they say they havnt the equipment in ireland to test it here....

What i need is to get is another ICU from another 650 Dragstar '99 - '03, and do a quick switcheroo to test it in my bike to see if it actually is this or not. Its located behind the battery so its a quick and easy enough job to do.

If you have, or know someone who has a Yamaha 650a Dragstar Classic '99 - '03 id appreciate it if you could contact me to see if we can arrainge something. Im located in the Castleknock / Lucan area, the bike is in a workshop in Clondalkin.

its not your ecu , it has no control over your starter relay or fuel pump , bridge the immobiliser circuits on the alarm think you'il find thats your initial problem

Maybe it will help clear things up a bit, the part im talking about is called the ignitor unit assembly part number 5BN823050000, it contains the ignition relay and fuel pump relay. Its part no: 15 in this link: http://www.cmsnl.com....list/E-12.html
As for the alarm we have already disengaged the immobiliser by replacing the ignition fuse and removing the alarm from the loom

Mate of mine has a yamaha vmax....had very similar issues to you. He had checked everything, and it turned out to be a problem with his sidestand switch regardless. Not sure how you tested them, but I would check your wiring diagram and make sure they need to be either open circuit or closed circuit in running condition. Not all bikes work on closed circuits.

If the unit contains relays for the fuel pump and ignition system, you should be able to short them with a 12v line on the wiring side of the icu, and skip the icu relay-thereby rule in or out the icu. Failing all that, repairing your icu isnt as daunting a task as it may seem depending on your ability to solder or not.

Sometimes its just a cracked solder joint that needs a fresh wallop of solder.

Apologies if Im stating the obvious...but if your bike has been sitting since March, the battery might be too weak to turn over the engine.

How did the problems start before it became totally unuseable ?

Interesting point there about shorting it with a 12v line i must try that
I would much prefer to test my icu in another bike or vice versa before opening anything..

Battery is on trickle charge, and ive tested the voltage each time im working on the bike, plus have a spare battery too, it was worth mentioning

Edit: I had been driving back from the tipp photorally point and noticed the left indicators were coming on and remaining static for 30seconds - a minute, this happened 5 / 6 times on the way back to dublin. So the next available time i had i took off the seat and had a good look through the wiring to see if there was any breaks. Took off a relay i had problems ( and replaced ) last year looking for corrosion, saw none, gave it a quick clean and small spray of wd40 and put it back on. Put everything back together, tried to start the bike and got nothing. Ive since replaced that same relay again in case it was that but no change.

What's that relay for? Priced at £73stg, I presume it's for the on-board cappuccino maker


Were the indicators coming on of their own volition? It sounds like a wonky alarm. Has this happened since you removed the alarm from the bike? Are you certain the immobiliser wiring is bypassed correctly? They can be tricky to bypass if the alarm is of a reasonable quality and fitted correctly.
