As some of ye mite know Im having a problem with my (annoying, headwreckin) beloved FZR400.

Amongst all the other ideas thats been thrown at me Ive been told it could be the stator coil. So I have a few questions for those more knowledgable than me.

First off...what the bloody hell is a stator and what does it do? Apart from finding out its "the stationary part of a rotary system" via google I really havent a clue.

Secondly...How would I find out if mine was faulty?

Third...would a faulty stator give the following symptoms?: The bike will turn over when the start button is pushed but she miten't fire up. If the throttle is opened to make her fire up she will start but wont rev more than 1k revs even when throttle is fully opened. Take your hand off the throttle and she will die. When this is happening there is a wicked smell of petrol coming out of the exhaust. This is only an intermittant problem. 9 times out of ten she will start when cold, this problem seems to arise when she is warmed up but that said she could be lying up for 30 mins to an hour after been driven 10 miles and the problem is there..

And last..where would I get a new stator/coils/whatever if it was the prob. I can't seem to find em online.

I think electrical.
Plugs
Coils
Rectifier.

Years ago I put new plugs in a twin cyl.
Wouldn't start. Never had any probs starting.
Put back old plugs - away it went.

Also - beware long and short reach plugs.
If its too long - hole in piston.
If too short can't run properly.

The next time it acts up have a spare spark plug at the ready so you can check each cylinder is getting spark,if you find a good spark then you should remove the plugs and check for fouling from a rich mixture or if they are being starved,is there a fuel pump on the bike? If so that could be intermittent!!

New plugs fitted the other day, she started grand, not a bother for a couple of days then back to square one again.
Old plugs had carbon deposits on them and electrodes slightly corroded. There is about 3,000km on them.
New to her but second hand fuel pump put in a couple months back..off an xj 750 I think it was. Its priming grand, can hear it when turn key.

Intermittent problems like this are a real pain in the a55,mostly because you find yourself going around in circles trying to locate and/or replicate the problem.Have you checked the condition of the the needles in the carbs? Wear on these and the emulsion tubes will cause problems metering fuel so worth a look.When you say the electrodes are corroded(and low mileage) how much are we talking,have you any pics of the old plugs?

The carbs have been checked by a garage and they couldnt find any obvious problems with them. It was suggested to get them cleaned ultrasonically but that costs more than buying a second hand set..
The garage said there was a tiny bit of wear on the electrodes..I personally wouldnt have a clue looking at them just that theyre black. Ill get up a pic of em 2moro.
