The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, has said the Government is considering banning smoking in cars.

According to a report in today's Irish Times, Dr Reilly said he was "in favour of legislating in this area" but added the public would need persuading first.

He was responding to a parliamentary question from Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health confirmed that officials were examining two possible scenarios.

One would be a ban on smoking if children under 16 were present. If this was considered unworkable, a blanket ban on smoking in private cars would be considered.

If implemented, this would make Ireland the first country to impose such a ban. Smoking in taxis, company cars and vans, which are classed as workplaces, is already prohibited.

Anti-smoking campaigner Luke Clancy said today that a comprehensive ban would work. "Second hand smoke levels in cars are very high and second hand smoke can be lethal," he said.



Previous evidence had shown that when people became aware of the dangers of second hand smoke they were not prepared to harm others.

Silly season is well and truly underway. If it ever did become law it'd be enforced as well as the mobile phones ban so I doubt anyone would loose any sleep over it.

Kev there already is a law there to stop people flicking buts at you, (littering)

if it keeps happening to you and you can't cope, then what can anybody do for you.

This smoking lark will just give the pigs something else to land on average joe. They will say "I, only doing my job bullsiht"

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the very selfish attidute of smokers to others, not even a case of "it's my bad habit, and I shouldn't make others suffer the consequences" just out of common courtesy.

I have no issue with people having a smoke or a drink but it should impact on others, should it?

I think nose picking should be banned whilst driving too! I see far more people (99% are men) picking their noses than I see people smoking. Surely that's a distraction, not to mention the consequences of flicking bogies out of the window!

I'd be delighted if a ban on smoking in cars with a minor present was brought in and enforced. Nothing galls me more than seeing a smoke filled car with a baby or toddler strapped in the back seat. You might as well smoke and drink whilst pregnant if you care that little about your children.

I know we all rememer our folks puffing away in the front seats when we were kids, but we also remember not wearing seatbelts and having six of us crammed into the back seat. Neither of these activities are seen as 'okay' anymore and that's a good thing. Hopefully smoking in the car with your kids in the back will go the same way.

Forcing your smoking habit onto others is selfish. Simple as. To me, the right to not have to suffer another's (proven to be unhealthy) habit, outweighs their right to indulge in that habit in my presence. Not everyone sees it that way but thats my 0.02c on the matter.

I only quoted the relevant part as the rest was irrelevant just like your argument. How about you take a look at yourself and see if you are fair or just bending the truth to suit your own agenda.

No smoking doest say that, I'd have to push you over, pull down my pants and squeeze one out on your head to say that.

@ Hatcho... nobody is saying they are going to hot box their infants but you better believe that Mr piggie isnt going to see any difference between someone having a smoke in an otherwise empty car and 6 people chain smoking with a child in the front. They will just slap out the fines and award the points.

Also, just FYI, I dont smoke in the car that often anyway (truth be told, I smoke maby 5-10 cigarettes a week for about 7 years now) cause the ash makes the black dash and upholstery dirty, because the dog wouldnt like it and cause the girlfriend doesnt like the smell. But sometimes I have the odd one and guess who would be fecking caught, no way hoes, not having it.

See what I mean about being Selfish, BTW I have just been informed that I have a major lung health problem that has been put down to my sixty a day habit even though I have never smoked a day in my life, you tell me that that is fair!





I come from that typical Irish family of 6 kids of the 60's and 70's and am the only non smoker apart from my mother who is currently fighting her second case of cancer, father dird of Cancer from smoking and sister has cancer from smoking,,,,

I need my voice for my job, but it may be taken away from me if I can't fight this problem and I had no choice in the matter just put up and shut up....

Sorry to hear about your health problems Kev, it is unfair to pick up someone else's bill I agree its not right what happened in your particular situation.
