Do they not care if 30% of us are invisible ??
I think compulsory hi-viz is a bad idea and it should be the riders choice to wear it or not.

they are basically giving Drivers/pedetrians a get out of jail card, "sorry couldn't see you".

I don't feel right in the car without one.

Even if we didn't "have" to wear them i still would ( cus im ugly)

I can only suppose that percentage makes them happy. We have asked for the scientific evidence that hi-viz work but they haven't replied

Yes the onus should be on other road users to engage sight and brain and look properly. The problem with trying to make us more "visible" is that it ignores the basic problem of other road users not looking properly. There is no scientific evidence that people are more aware of you when your wearing hi-viz. I'm trying to find out what percentage of bike accidents occur when the rider is wearing a hi-viz.

True the difference being that there was evidence that seat belts work there is none that hi-viz does.

Will it cost me money?
No.
I have a couple of full hi-viz jackets. I dont wear them at the moment but it would not be a huge pain to wear them again.
Do I think it will be a major improvement in rider safety, absolutely not. I once pulled out in front of a bike because I hadn't seen it. The rider was wearing a full hi-viz jacket and had headlights on dipped.
The rider was in a buslane on his own. it was dark, mid-winter and the bike blended into the headlights of the cars in the outside lane. I failed to see the bike primarliy because he was travelling at exactly the same speed as the surroundling traffic and maintained a straight line.
I would have been going marginally faster and on seeing a car about to pull out I would have moved from side to side a little in the lane in order for the movement to catch the car drivers attention. But thats just me.
The Garda on the bike didnt and he nearly plowed into me

Didn't stop a driver pulling out on Me Monday or tuesday Morning at the pub the Inn in the park..he couldn't see me because of the telegraph pole in the way..but what was the problem as he hadn't gone near the Cycle lane so i shouldn't have had cause to raise an issue...two basic driving mistakes made there.
One don't go unless you can see its safe to move
two..cycle lanes are for pushbikes..
He didn't understand either of those facts.
Now, on the Sportsbike, of a weekend i don't wear High viz..unless its heavily raining or we are out on a slow run and we need people to stop at junctions and direct others.

You should be bothered...its about choice, not wether its not gonna cost you money cus you have one or not.
We all don't need motorbikes that can go a billion miles an hour when the max speed limit is 74mph/120kph...but i will absolutely defend your right to have one.
You have the choice and that choice should not be taken from you, which they are working on also with mandatory a.b.s., Computer/sat nav speed limiting etc. etc.

As soon as pedestrians start wearing hi viz and people out walking dogs and the dogs wear them well then, I still won't wear one. Is the hi-viz industry lobbying those who make the laws?
The whole deal is just silly.

You never hear about "freedom of choice" from those doing track days, (you wear what you are told to wear) yet there is a hew and cry about road safety legislation.
Can you imagine the carnage if it was not compulsory to wear helmets? The injuries would be too horrific to contemplate.
I was attacked for these views before on another forum but I am entitled to an opinion the same as everyone else.

But.... I also agree with Norrie. To be honest I think people have more of a problem feeling they're being told what to do, than they have wearing the actual hi viz. I'm not at all sure that's a good argument not to.

This would be my objection to wearing a Hi-Viz jacket, surely the vest would make more sense. The cost of an armoured Hi-Viz jacket would be prohibitive for a lot of people in these hard times. Young people starting out on their first bike have enough costs to contend with.
