Just when the debate was getting going about my post it was deemed to be closed - is that not censorship! I think it is important to have some reasonable debate about an issue such as this (qualifications, reputation etc.) as it gives the people an opportunity to form a view, without some form of debate/opinions this cannot happen.
I think posts should be let run a bit longer than somebody deems to be enough, that way the information, good or bad can get out there.

I can understand your point and agree with you to a degree but the problem is that thread had every chance of affecting a persons reputation,there was one comment that had potential for a whole different debate that was completely uncalled for,the answer you were after is within the thread and mentioned by a variety of people

I was merely wanting to get some feedback from people who had experience of them as I would prefer to know what they were like before I used them or any limitations they had. Didn't know I had to provide an intro for posting on this forum topic though. There is no question of me starting into somebody's busines, just looking for a bit of feedback that's all.
Only 2 posts related to having had experience of them by the way, the rest were opinions.

Looky here, the thread for sure was going nowhere, except in this circumstance you were an unknown asking a probable preloaded question.
Given the answers you got, and the amount of views within that timespan, I decided to close it.

IF you want to call it censorship!, thats fine, for the rest of us we call it a little different.

However root admin may take the view that thread only served to act as free advertising for a business.

On the number of recommendstions I would say that you would need to look at the stats. How many bikers in the area? How many bike workshops in the are?
How many people in the area who use s specific workshop AND are members here?
To be honest I was surprised you got so many responses.

Were you unhappy that nobody came in and slagged Chopper off?

If that is the case then come out and say it and stop pishing around.

You know the simple thing about it is, you dont know how good or bad a mechanic is until you use them yourself and make up your own mind.

What if someone is a great mechanic, but you can't stand their personality ? Nothing worse than a condescending plick.
What if someone is a great laugh, decent all round guy, has a workshop full of impressive bits, and totally fcuks up the job ?
What if someone has no troubleshooting ability, and just buys part after part "shotgunning" your problem until something hits ? Its all your money.
What if someone is regularly used by many many internet people, and regularly makes srious mistakes that seem to be glossed over and always gets recommended to others ?
What if someone is a great mechanic, has years of experience, and knows how to charge you through the nose for it ?
What if someone is great on one make of bike, and clueless on yours? You wont know until it costs you more.

There's lots of variables that make a "good mechanic" in my opinion, and they differ from customer to customer. In my opinion, some folks trust their machines to people I wouldnt trust a wheelbarrow to, and there are average mechanics out there who charge far too much, and take far too long.

A qualification is only an indicator that someone has been taught a course of instruction by someone. What they have come away with from that course is another thing. I got a B in french in my leaving...can i speak french ...not at all.

I think the best approach is to sound out someone in your own way, if you get a recommendation, give whoever it is a small unimportant cheap job to do for you, and see what the experience is like. Its up to you as the customer to go back for the more important/costly jobs if you think it's worth it and they seem capable.
At least if your judgement is wrong, its your mistake. Nothing worse than depending on a strangers recommendation and it being REALLY bad.
Its when you REALLY need a mechanic and you get stuck with a handless moron that it really hurts the head and the pocket.

To be clear on your own original question, have never used Chopper meself, but have only heard good things about him on the internet. Met the guy a couple of times, and he seems sound. From what I've read he's bailed many a lad out of the siht.
