Buffering

I was told by one instructor that buffering wasn't appropriate in towns. I still do it, but I don't always do life-savers.

i call it 'car cover' - putting space - or another road user between you and the Hazard.
Every trainer has their own vocabulary.
Q./ Where's the best place to be in relation to a Hazard?
A./ Somewhere else!

Yep, I tend to do that, especially with trucks coming towards me, found that one out in Spain, even if it's just a comfort thing. You get a huge blast of hot air at you when the big artics pass by.

Around town, unless I'm in a rush, I tend to leave lotsa space between me and the car in front of me.
Also, when I'm going through bottlenecks like Phibsboro where cars cut each other up and pedestrians cross the road between cars regularly I like to let several cars break the trail for me. I don't want to be taken down by some skanger especially one pushing a child out into traffic.

The one that did catch me was driving past a gap in a row of terraced houses. The gale blowing through the gap caught me side on and nearly took
me across the road. Once bitten eh?

Whether in the car or on the bike I try to affect other traffic as little as possible. My pulling out shouldn't require someone else to adjust their driving and if I can travel my journey with as little affect on the other road users around me then things went well. I know this is 'in a perfect world' stuff but it still is worth trying to achieve.
Back to the original question - I do a lifesaver each and every time its required - little to gain from skipping it and lots to lose if you don't do one when its needed...
