As the title says....30km/h speed limit for Patrick Street, Grand Parade, Oliver Plunkett Street, North Main Street and Cornmarket Street and also some other streets.

I believe this was tried in Dubland before but then rescinded?

And once more Europe is quoted as a reason for this new thing being implemented...

We have it around my way still and it makes sense because of the road design, visibility issues and the fact that there's a significant elder population. It was rescinded on Dublin's Quays which are straight, have plenty of traffic lights and lots of traffic.

There'll be bicycles coming down Patrick St that will be hard pushed to keep the speed that low. No this isn't coming from europe it's just the latest safety craze. purely because someone believes that it will be safer without the evidence to back it up.

I certainly cycle around faster than that! Although with the amount of sleepy people who stroll out in front of you on Patrick St you can really go that fast anyway...

Those streets are usually constricted by parked cages and awash with kamikaze pedestrians, in fairness. I still haven't quite decided what I think of this 30 km/h malarkey, though.

Preparing people for congestion charges to be introduced soon as the Lee tunnel is tolled id say, making driving through the city unattractive, they wont want the tunnel running at a loss like the Limerick one

Well if it's for "Pedestrian Friendly" purposes then I'm all for it. I hereby undertake to stay under 30kph when riding on the footpath.

Tbh I think it's a bit of a joke really. What they should be doing is trying to make road users AND pedestrians more aware and look properly. This new speed limit isn't going to stop idiot pedestrians from walking right out on top of you, after all you can seriously hurt someone by going 30 kph anyway. It also won't stop people from going faster than this new 30 kph speed limit in my opinion.

Educating pedestrians to cross at the lights when the green man is on would be more in their line, not saying I cross the road at lights all the time but if I do Jaywalk I'm always extremely careful unlike some out there.

When I heard it was coming in I tried driving at 30kph in the cage, you'd be slipping the clutch constantly to hold the speed, even driving with no accelerator pressed takes you over the limit.!

as previously said it might not be such a bad idea with all the idiots who walk out on the road and traffic is usually at a standstill there anyways, besides at 30km its safer to enjoy the "scenery"
