I know and realize that over 40 Years is a long time to be out of the Bike riding world but...
Reading up on the new EU Licensing laws, it is a real eye opener of a shocker for any young 16 Year Old starting out.My full sympathies to all of them!

Then i look to my own situation.
Almost 60,separate Bike licence expired in 1971, Full UK Driving licence in B, C1, D1, F, K, L, N and P, since then.
Where do i have to start back? The Category P on UK Licence is Moped.

In my years of experience, alteration of the handling skills provided a lot more experience than doing Figures of 8 in a compound! An assult course provides far more experience too, why has nobody thought of that one?

The differences between us and our neighbours learner riders.

In Ireland:
The Theory test is required Before a Provisional licence is issued.
Learners may only ride while supervised by an “A” holder until after their IBT.
After passing the practical test a 2 Year restriction applies on power to weight ratio.
Provisional licence 15.00
IBT 625.00 to 650.00 This does NOT include bike hire
Theory test 40.60

Practical test 85.00
Provisional to full licence FREE

In UK:
The Theory test is not required until you apply for your Practical Test.
Learners must attend CBT before being allowed to ride on the road.
All UK Driving licences now include Provisional Motorcycle category.
After passing the Practical test, there is absolutely no restrictions on bikes Power.
Provisional licence 50.00
CBT 120.00 to 150.00 approx - this should include bike hire
Theory test 31.00
Practical test - Module 1 15.50 15.50 on saturdays and weekday evenings
Practical test - Module 2 75.00 88.50 on saturdays and weekday evenings
Provisional to full licence FREE Valid until 70th Birthday

You don't have to be supervised by a cat 'A' rider as you can't ride on the road until you have completed your IBT.

Theory Test Euro 40.60
Learner Permit Euro 15
IBT can be got from 290 including bike hire.(Shop around)

So you could get on the road for less than 400 Euro. Just my

Local ADI informs me there is nothing in law to prevent me riding under supervision before my IBT!
RSA website states "Motorcycle riders must complete the programme before driving unsupervised on the road while a learner."

While I sympathise with your issues to some extent, nothing in life is perfect, including licensing and training legislation.

The RSA IBT program is only 1 year in use and there are bound to be some complaints, confusion and slight anomalies. We all know that Ireland's costs is higher than that of the UK in many products and services - and if you have the time, a UK address and want to take a training holiday there, good luck to you.

When you think of the overall investment in biking over a lifetime - the bike(s), repairs, parts and mods, protective gear, insurance, tax, fuel - the list goes on....

- the cost of theory and practical tests, IBT and other training and licences is really very small relatively speaking.

Any instructor coaching you would be sensitive to the fact that they weren't teaching a total beginner and would moderate their training methods and content accordingly (while still covering the full IBT syllabus, of course!)

So, when will you bite the bullet?! Accept it as a challenge! Channel the energy into doing what you really want to do - back-to-biking!

Because the seller wants to sell. I have heard that before about combo's but the Gards would say your riding a bike.

I have no argument about the pillion issue. I can't understand how just by passing your test your suddenly able to carry a pillion.

OMG you are so right about Legislation, Europe trains their riders BEFORE testing them!
Ireland is the ONLY Country that Tests them FIRST! even before they get a Licence. (The Theory Test)
THE IRISH GOVERNMENT DOES NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF THE GRADUATED LICENCE PROCESS.

Its Damn MASSIVE when you are on a measly Home Carers Allowance


Got a quote from UK for a 1 DAY DAS for £330. So may be Biting some Bullets shortly.
