I bought a Zumo 660 last Jan, noting at the time that I was entitled to a free map update providing I registered it within 90 days of first use. I played about with it for a while and then registered it on the Garmin site in late Feb. As I was not due to leave on my trip to France till June I decided to delay downloading my free map update till nearer my departure date.
In early June I went online to do this, but could find nothing on the Garmin site to guide me to my free update. I contacted Garmin who told me that the offer was one free update providing I registered my unit AND downloaded my update withing 90 days of first use. I pointed out that the second condition had not been mentioned on the box, in the instructions etc, but by the time I left for France the argument was still not settled. We spent most of the trip on minor roads, with no mapping issues (except those caused by Mapsource, but thats another story).
When I got back I continued to play ping pong email with Garmin. Eventually I copied all the emails and wrote a cover letter to the MD of Garmin Europe. By return I got an email to say a free update had been added to my basket on their site. Thank you Garmin.
Interestingly, I went online today to check for new software (not maps) updates for the 660. (There was one - why do Garmin not email and tell you this?) Under "My Maps" I noticed a prominent link to "Free Map Update Policy". Hmmmm....that was not there before. Lo and behold, clicking on the link revealed a statement that is linked to the users date of registration, so for me it states "The nüMaps Guarantee entitles you to unlimited free map updates if and when available within 90 days of Feb 10, 2011" and goes on to give all the conditions in detail. Now if only they had all that when I registered there would have been no problem.
One up to me?

i lost out on the free updates last year. I was given a Garmin as a birthday present in 2010. Just before the 90 days were up, I logged on for the map update but turns out when my wife was buying it, they turned it on in the shop to show her how tu use it and it registered first use 3 weeks before I received it so I missed the 90 day deadline
