found a 1990 blue and white genesis - hasn't been started in 6 years
deal is, if i can get it going, i can have it
its all apart, seats off, all plastics are on the shelves, tank, etc

i suspect that after all this time the carbs are going to be stuck fast or like glue, right ?

Question is :- do i need to strip em all down or is there another way around this
and if so, whats the best thing to clean em with ?

Depends, were the carbs drained before the bike was laid up? If not, they might be beyond rescue. Still, if you,re getting the bike FOC, it,s gotta be worth a shot at cleaning them. Full carb strip, liberal application of carb cleaner/ ultrasonic bath may do the trick. Either way, best of luck with it! BTW, is it an EXUP?or previous model? Any pics?

Not got much time online at the moment....

But with an EXUP, it'll be the EXUP valve that'll be seized from being laid up, the carbs may need emulsion tubes (depends on mileage)
The EXUP cables are a Yamaha dealer only item and are expensive.


The 1990 model will be the twin headlight one...

I've an EXUP RU myself.... It also needs some work.

The lad who owned it, was waiting to have his first son
and so took the bike apart while the wife was in labour

he was just going to clean it up, but then the son was born
and that was it, he never went back to it, so he never drained the carbs
or the petrol tank or anything at all, the tyres are fcuked and there's
a thick layer of dust from front ot back, lovely !

here's the funny bit, cos of new city smog rules
i can't drive the bike within city limits, Area C-Milan
so even if i get it running, i'll have to have it trailered out
to the countryside to drive it, what a fcuker that is eh !

The carbs will probably be O.K. if they were taken in out of the weather.
They will need to be stripped down and every piece of rubber in them will have to be checked.
Carb cleaner /cotton buds is good and will do the trick but you may have to use a bit of elbow grease to get all the dirt out.
If the carb was left in the severe cold you can suspect the rubber O rings in the carb to have perished and more likely the carb diaphrams on top (these might have pin holes so inspect them carefully).
While you are checking the carbs check the inlet carb rubbers as well cos I would bet they are cracked after six years non use!
P.M. me if you need help I have no training apart from stripping these carbs down 15 times to get to my problem so I reckon at this stage I know my way round them!

for the sheer crack i'll try starting it
without taking the carbs out,i'll try a new battery
plugs, oil, filters, fresh petrol, and i'll
let u know how it fairs out !

If your gonna try firing her up with minumal effort I recommend getting some gas (as in calor gas/kosangas) into the airbox. A mate used to this with boat engines when they hadn't been used over the winter. Fill the airbox for about 20 secs and then crank her over with no throttle. The gas is enough to fire the engine up and get some heat going into the engine. You might have to do this a few times to get the fuel flowing . Also it wont do the engine any harm to be turned over a good few times to get oil moving around where there has been non for a long time before you go revving her.
