I pressed starter button this morning and just got a click sound. Tried several times with same result.

Indicators worked so it didn't seem like the battery was the problem.

I put her into 1st gear and rolled back and forward then back into neutral and tried pressing the start button again. She started as if nothing was wrong. Anybody here ever experience this? Did rolling back and forward in gear connect the starter gear properly to the engine? Would my starter be about to fail?

All ideas appreciated.

Dust from brushes?

Thought I had such a problem, opened up starter motor, cleaned it up and put it back together, no bother since.

No harm checking connections at the battery or starter.

Happened again this morning. Again I put her into 1st and rolled back and forth and she started first time. I'd rather not open up the starter if it's resolved as simply as this!

Connections and battery seem OK. I'm usually around town in rush-hour trafficc so it doesn't get a really good charge. I'll take a blast up to Mammy at the weekend to put a bit more of a charge into it.

Just going into 7th year with this bike so maybe it's time for a change?

Had the exact same prob and wasted 50 quid on new brushes when it turned out to be worn bearings on the starter motor, get it checked before ya spend any cash.

If it's the ER5, removing the starter is easy enough. To reinstall it you have to take the engine cover off the left side, which may require a new gasket.

For a while I thought it might be the side-stand cut-off switch but there was a bit of a 'clank' when starting today. Not much of a 'clank' but enough to think something inside the starter might need doing!

I'd rather leave any possible fix to my man in M & A. I'm kinda hoping to get about a grand off a new Innova from him shortly. He already knows there might be a starter problem.
