when i hit the "flash" button, both bulbs work so its not them, they were working fine earlier in the day, then stopped working, then came back on again!!!
now they're off altogether only a little bulb in the centre comes on.
sorry for the lack of a detailed explanation as im not the most knowledgable on bike mechanics / electrics.
any suggestions?

If they're H4 (dual filament) you may have blown the low-beam but the high (flash) works fine.
Does high beam work normally?

If you don't like what you see, get involved and change it !

or male/female connector that
runs from the switch gear or
the fuse
try firing in some WD40 or
remove the 2 No. screws and release the
switch gerar housing and clean, dry it off
checking the multi-coloured cables and all
seated in correctly
generally the connectors don't give hassle
so, it could be a fuse, there is a 10A for
the high beam on that model, it can't be the 30A
cos if that was gone, you'd have nothing at all

I know that sounds strange but the lighting circuit runs through the starter switch so that the lights go off to take the strain off the battery when you press the starter. I simply opened the switch gear and re-soldered the joint.
Hope this helps.

you hit the starter button to take the strain off the battery ?
Yamaha don't do it, or KTM . . . .

I had a PITA problem with Marian's SuperFour a while back, turned out that the start button was not returning fully to it's rest position, resulting in the headlight circuit being open-circuited.
